Review

Last time I had  reviewed Heidi  an orphan girl who was naive, innocent and to all intents and purpose lived a sheltered life in the midst of love and affection, I could not help but reflect that even  Huckleberry was an orphan but how their paths had diverged, while one saw the goodness of humanity another saw the lurking squalor beneath the veneer of civilized humanity.

It is to the credit of Huckleberry that he did not succumb to the negative forces and rose above it to embrace humanity, kindness and compassion - This makes him a hero and shows that gems are hidden even among the lowest of the low.

Huckleberry Finn does not restrict itself to Huckle's upbringing and the choices he makes, the book takes a broader view at the slave trading and the inhuman way the slaves were treated back then. The slaves find their voice through Jim, A black who flees from being sold  to another master.  His plight highlights how even the most generous , compassionate masters can be thoughtless in matters of slaves that they were even below the ranks of pets!

The journey through the river is a no man's land with both Huckleberry and Jim cut off from civilization. The symbolic suggestion that : devoid of human laws and prejudice colors cease to matter was tellingly told in that travel.

Huckleberry is a book that is for young and old alike.
