Reflections
I had heard very much about 50 shades of grey from my friends hence was quite curious to read the book but circumstances had kept me away from the book until now. It was with great excitement that I opened the book and begun to read only to be gobsmacked within few pages - you see, I was under the impression that tone of the book would be of lit. standard but to my dismay it turned out to be quite juvenile!
Apart from that the plotting seem to be hurried, the development of characters is not detailed nor much reflection is cast on them.I wish James had paid as much attention to the character development and sequencing that she has given to the detailed sex descriptions.Somehow it feels as if the book is built around the sex-capdes than Sex being the intrinsic part of the structuring.
Does the book not have any good points? Yes, there are several good points ..One is the fact that although Anastasia is smitten by Grey and is overwhelmed by his charm, she does not forget her brains, she has enough sense to realize that Grey is marred and has a flaw.
Kate as her loyal friend is the best thing about the book, I wish they had developed her a bit further and shown few instances of Anastasia and Kate's bonding. Another character I would have liked to see is Ray, Anastasia's step dad and one with whom Anastasia feels a kinship.
Another positive feature is, even though Anastasia is heads over heels in love with Christian, she refuses to let him dominate her or control her. Anastasia makes a stand and she stays true to it even when the price to pay is her happiness and new found love. She chooses her independence and respect over love and that is quite appreciable.
The story as such moves superficially, there are no in depth reflection from the character (The emails being the only redeeming feature where you tend to get insight on and about the characters) . Relationship is depicted as cosmetic and is hurried through. There is a sense of it being a fanfiction rather than a full blown novel.Overall, 50 shades is a representation of a decadent , dysfunctional relationship prevalent in the society.
Leaving you with the trailer of 50 Shades of grey :)
